One of the key individuals in Islamic history is Prophet Saleh (صالح), who was sent to the ancient Arab tribe of the Thamud as a prophet.
They rejected the worship of Allah, indulging in idol worship and corrupt practices.
The Thamud had disregarded their Creator’s instructions, much like the people of ‘Ad, to whom Prophet Hud was sent. They lost sight of the fact that Allah gave them with their skills and riches and instead grew arrogant and self-sufficient. Rather than showing appreciation, they persisted in living contrary to the commands of God.
Additionally, Saleh cautioned them about the effects of their disobedience. He clarified that they would suffer harsh punishment if they did not turn to Allah and repent. The residents of Thamud, however, disregarded him and his message in spite of his earnest attempts and cautions.
The She-Camel’s Miracle
The miracle of the she-camel is among the most renowned aspects of Prophet Saleh’s mission. Saleh appealed to Allah for a miraculous sign when the people of Thamud sought one to demonstrate his prophetic status. In response, Allah sent a she-camel, which is a special kind of huge camel that came out of a rock
For them, it was a source of sustenance as well as a sign.
One day the people may drink from the well, and the next day the she-camel would drink from it. It was an obvious act of divine Providence and a test of their obedience and faith.
• “And we sent their brother Hud to ‘Aad and their brother Saleh to Thamud.” “O my people,” he replied, “worship Allah; you have no other god.” He created you from the dirt and placed you there. (Quran 11:61)
But instead of praising the miracle, the inhabitants of Thamud were incensed at the camel’s presence and the constraints that were imposed on it. They even conspired to hurt the camel. The community’s dissident men plotted to murder the she-camel,
This was an obvious sign that they violated Allah’s order.
The Thamud’s Punishment
Prophet Saleh forewarned the people of Thamud that their deeds would result in divine vengeance when they killed the she-camel. Nevertheless, they disregarded the warning and continued to act haughtily, making fun of him.
Allah punished them severely for their unbelief by sending a powerful earthquake and a dreadful thunderclap. The punishment came down with full force on the morning of the third day. The homes collapsed, the Thamud were wiped out, and the entire town was annihilated. The tragic calamity is described in the Quran:
Thus, they were grabbed by the earthquake and found themselves in their homes, lying prone like corpses. (Quran 7:77–78)
A clear reminder of the repercussions of conceit, disobedience, and rejecting Allah’s signs is provided by the annihilation of the Thamud.
The Significance of Monotheistic Tawhid: The invitation to worship the One true God and give up all idolatry was the main message from Saleh. Islam and all Abrahamic religions are based on this lesson.
Patience and Perseverance in the Face of Rejection: Saleh encountered strong opposition and animosity from his people, just like past prophets. Despite being warned and given obvious indicators, the inhabitants of Thamud continued their
disobedience. While Allah’s justice triumphs over those who continue in wickedness, His mercy is always shown to those who turn from their sins.
In conclusion
The tale of Prophet Saleh and the Thamud is a potent reminder of the value of humility, gratitude, and faith
