It has been a topic of Ashab al-Kahf contemplation for generations and is related in Surah Al-Kahf (18:9–26). The narrative of these young believers highlights themes of faith, endurance, divine protection. The benefits of having faith in Allah, especially during hard and oppressive times.
Context
A group of young men Ashab al-Kahf lived in the city where the story starts. They rejected the idolatry and corruption that were common in their society and instead believed in the unity of God. A monarch or dictator ruled the society, enforcing idolatry and persecuting anyone who objected with his religious views.
The young men made the decision to leave the city and take sanctuary in a secluded cave, away from the influence of their oppressive rulers. After recognising that they could not publicly practice their religion without suffering grave persecution. Their wish to uphold their beliefs and worship Allah fearlessly drove them to make this choice. The cave turned into a haven where they could hide from the perils of the society that aimed to discredit their ideas.
The Enchanted Sleep
As a sign of Allah’s protection, the young lads fell off once they were inside the cave. But their rest was not just any sleep. They spent an incredible amount of time in the cave; according to most tales, they were there for 300 years. But depending on the lunar or solar calendar, some interpretations place that number at 309 years. They were protected from the effects of time by the cave, and Allah had them stay in a deep sleep.
During this time, their bodies did not age. They were not aware of the passing of time when they finally woke up. This wonderful sleep showed Allah’s ability to keep His followers safe and provide them with rest even during the most trying times.
Their sleep is vividly described in the Quran, which emphasises how Allah preserved their bodies. Allah’s will prevented their bodies from rotting and even protected the places where they lay. They were not conscious, but their eyes were open and closed as though they were still alert. This amazing preservation demonstrates Allah’s enduring power and capacity to protect people who put their faith in Him.
The New Society and the Awakening
The young men got lost and unsure of the amount of time that had gone when they woke up from their long sleep.
After a lengthy time of rest, many thought they had only slept for a day or a portion of a day. One of them went to the nearby town to purchase some food. Since they were afraid they had been asleep for too long. He had no idea that the currency had changed when he arrived at the market and attempted to pay with cash. The young man realised that a significant change took place when the town’s residents stopped using the old currency.
Talking to the town’s residents, he learnt that the tyrannical ruler who had previously imposed idolatry was no longer in charge. The town had changed, and the people’s beliefs shifted as well.
The Ashab e kahf knew that the town had adopted the monotheism that he and his friends had previously found difficult to follow. The young men’s faith and sacrifice had ultimately led to a wider understanding of the truth. This understanding validated that Allah’s plan had been carried out over the ages.
The young man went back to the cave and told his friends what he had seen. That amazing experience served as a testament to Allah’s might and kindness, and word quickly spread about their wonderful sleep. Their survival and eventual reawakening served as a symbol of faith triumphing over oppression in many ways. Their story acted as a source of inspiration for others.
