Prophet Zechariah, known in Islam as Zakariya (عليه السلام), holds a respected position among the prophets mentioned in the Qur’an and the Bible. He was a descendant of Prophet Dawud (David) and belonged to the priestly lineage of the Children of Israel. Living during a time when divine revelation had become rare and religious devotion was weakening among the people, Zakariya (AS) stood as a pillar of piety, sincerity, and perseverance.

Zakariya was not only a prophet but also a guardian of the sacred temple in Jerusalem. The birth of Yahya was extraordinary not only because of his parents’ old age but also because of the virtues he was endowed with from a young age: wisdom, purity, and compassion. Allah says about Yahya:
“We gave him wisdom while yet a child, and tenderness from Us and purity, and he was devout.” (Qur’an 19:12-13)

The story of Zakariya and Yahya serves as a reminder that nothing is impossible for God. Even when all worldly conditions suggest otherwise, the power of sincere prayer and unwavering faith can bring about miracles. Zakariya’s trust in God’s mercy never faded, and his example continues to inspire believers to this day.

Another significant part of Zakariya’s life was his role as the guardian of Maryam (Mary), the mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him). As mentioned in the Qur’an, Zakariya found Maryam in the sanctuary with provisions that amazed him. When he asked her where they came from, she replied, “It is from Allah. Surely Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.” (Qur’an 3:37) This event further strengthened Zakariya’s faith and inspired him to make his famous dua for a child.

Zakariya’s death is not detailed in the Qur’an, but Islamic traditions suggest that he was martyred by people who rejected his teachings. Despite the tragic end, his life remains a testament to the values of patience, devotion, and hope in divine mercy.
